Dosakaya Pappu-Indian Lentil dal

Try Dosakaya Pappu, a South Indian lentil dish. It's creamy and perfect for a light meal. A tasty way to enjoy lentils!

1 tablespoon vegetable oil,  ½ teaspoon black mustard seeds, 1 teaspoon urad dal,  ¼ cup onion, 8 curry leaves,  ¼ teaspoon asafoetida,  2½ cup water

⅓ cup toor dal,  1 cup dosakaya, 1 tomato,  2 green chili,  ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon salt,  ¼ cup cilantro

Over medium heat, add oil, mustard seeds, urad dal. Add onion, fry until translucent. Add curry leaves and asafoetida.

Add water, toor dal, dosakaya, tomato, Serrano pepper, and turmeric powder. Cook for 3 whistles.

Mash the dal, and bring all ingredients together. Garnish with cilantro.

Serve with rice or roti. Experiment with variations like substituting tomatoes with raw mangoes.

Use a pressure cooker to reduce cooking time. Wash and rinse the dal before using. Add salt at the end of cooking. Substitute toor dal with moong dal or masoor dal if desired. Add crushed garlic while seasoning for a different flavor.

Serve with rice or roti for a traditional Indian meal. Pair with a side of vegetables or salad. Complement with pickles or chutneys for added flavor. Enjoy as a comforting and nutritious lunch or dinner.
