Tomato thokku is a popular South Indian side dish made with tomatoes, onion, and a blend of aromatic spices. It is a simple and delicious accompaniment to rice or dosa. The tomatoes are cooked until mushy, along with onions, mustard seeds, and urad dal, resulting in a flavorful and tangy dish. Serve hot with rice, dosa, or roti for a tasty meal.

2 large tomatoes, chopped  2 small onions, finely chopped 2 tablespoons vegetable oil  1/2 teaspoon black mustard seeds

1/2 teaspoon urad dal (skinless black gram)  1/2 teaspoon red chili powder 1/2 cup water  1/2 teaspoon salt  1 tablespoon chopped cilantro for garnish

In a pan, heat vegetable oil, black mustard seeds, and urad dal over medium heat. Allow mustard seeds to crackle.

Lower the heat to medium-low and add chopped onion. Saute until onion turns pink and translucent.

Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become mushy. Then add red chili powder and saute for a minute.

Pour in water and salt, cook until mixture thickens. Garnish with chopped cilantro. Serve hot with rice, dosa or roti.
