Authentic Rasam Recipe-South Indian soup

Rasam, a South Indian Soup is the easiest and simple recipe that can be made in minutes. Rasam will be included in our lunch menu for almost every day. It is the only menu item that can be served in any course of South Indian meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp Tamarind pulp
  • 1 Tomato
  • 1/2 Cup Coriander Leaves
  • 1 sprig Curry Leaves
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tsp Salt or as required

Ingredients For Grinding:

  • 1 tbsp Black Peppercorns
  • 1 tbsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp Red Chili
  • 2 Cloves Garlic

Ingredients For Seasoning:

  • 1 tsp Cooking Oil
  • 1 tsp Black Mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp Asafoetida
  • 1/2 tsp skinless black gram / urad dal

Instructions

  • Soak tamarind in half cup of water for about 20 minutes.
  • Extract tamarind juice and remove all the impurities by sieving.
  • Grind pepper, cumin seeds and 2 garlic pods along with tomato.
  • Heat pan in medium flame, add a tsp of oil. 
  • Now add mustard seeds, urad dal, and asafoetida. 
  • Allow the mustard seeds to splutter.
  • Then add tamarind extract, the ground mixture,  coriander leaves and curry leaves.
  • Add salt and turmeric powder.
  • Bring this mixture just to boil, switch off the stove and transfer to the serving bowl
  • Serve rasam hot with steamed rice or can be had as a soup.
