Semiya Upma Recipe

Semiya Upma Recipe is a breakfast of South Indians. One of the easy and simple dish to make under 15 mintues. Best to serve as a breakfast or as a midday snack.

  • 1 Cup Vermicelli / Semiya
  • 11/4 Cup Water
  • 3 tsp Cooking Oil
  • 1 tsp Black Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Skinless Black Gram / urad dal
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 1 Green Chili
  • 1 Red Chili
  • 8 Curry Leaves
  • 1/2 tsp salt or as required


  • Chop Onion, slit green chilies, wash curry leaves.
  • Roast Vermicelli in a teaspoon of cooking oil till it becomes golden brown on all the sides and keep aside.
  • In a pan add oil, mustard, black gram, red chili, green chili and wait till mustard get splutter.
  • Then add onion and curry leaves and fry them till onion becomes pink and soft, in medium flame.
  • Then add water and bring it to the boil. Now add roasted vermicelli, Salt and cook it in medium to slow flame till the water gets evaporated.
  • Then cook it for another 2-3 min in low flame till the vermicelli cooked completely and not sticky anymore.
  • Transfer it to the serving bowl and serve Semiya Upma hot with pickles or chutneys.


1. Roasting the Vermicelli makes non-stickier and firmer.
2. Add green peas or grated carrot for a variation.
