SPICY ROASTED SWEET POTATOES

These Spicy Roasted Sweet Potatoes are sweet and vibrant in flavor. The recipe is simple: cube sweet potatoes, toss with spices and olive oil, and roast for 20 minutes.

Spicy roasted sweet potatoes served in a bowl.

These spiced sweet potatoes became my go-to recipe and one of my trustworthy-hearty recipes for potlucks and parties.

They are simple to make, using just a few pantry staple ingredients(like this sweet potato pasta sauce). They are roasted to perfection and coated evenly with a delicious spice blend.

This makes each bite of the spicy roasted sweet potato irresistibly spicy on the outside and moist and sweet on the interior.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

⭐️It is a delicious twist on your classic grandma's.

⭐️Adjust the spice level to your preference.

⭐️A perfect combination of flavors.

Ingredients

Ingredients for spicy roasted sweet potatoes on a countertop.
  • The sweet potato: I used orange-colored sweet potatoes. Orange sweet potatoes are perfect for this recipe because they are moist and sweet compared to other varieties.
  • Cayenne pepper: If you worry about its spice level, you may completely substitute it for the smoked paprika or substitute it with a portion that matches your preference.
  • Mild Paprika: I've used mild paprika for the flavors.
  • Red pepper flakes: You need it, as well as the cayenne pepper, for the intense heat and flavor.
  • Onion and garlic powder: This combo makes this spicy roasted sweet potato delicious.
  • Olive oil: Makes the spices cling to the sweet potato cubes.

How To Make Spicy Roasted Sweet Potatoes?

  • Preheat the oven. Set the oven to 375°F.
  • Prep. Cut the sweet potatoes into 1-inch thick cubes cubes. And set aside.
  • Toss. In a large mixing bowl, add sweet potato cubes, olive oil, cayenne pepper, mild paprika, red pepper flakes, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt. Gently stir until all the ingredients combine.
  • Arrange. In the baking tray, arrange the sweet potatoes in a single layer without crowding.
  • Bake. Bake for about 15 minutes or until the sweet potato center turns soft.
  • Enjoy!. Transfer it to a serving plate and serve hot.

♨️How To Adjust The Heat

  • If you prefer this spiced sweet potato to be hot and spicy, add cayenne pepper to your satisfaction.
  • If you want to keep the spice level low, no worries. You can reduce the cayenne pepper or substitute it with paprika.
  • Another must-try variation is this fantastic sweet and spicy combination, which adds a tablespoon of brown sugar. This is our other family favorite.

Storage & Leftovers

  • To Store: Transfer the leftover roasted sweet potatoes to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • To Thaw: Leave them in the refrigerator overnight or gently microwave in small intervals.
  • To Reheat: Reheat gently in the oven, air fryer, or microwave until it turns warm. You can reheat in the oven at 375°F for 10 minutes, in the air fryer for up to 5 minutes, or gently reheat in the microwave in 30-second intervals until warm.

FAQ

Can I use the air fryer for making this spicy sweet potato?

Of course, this recipe is also perfect for the air fryer. Set the temperature to 375°F for 15 minutes, and cook by tossing them occasionally.

Can I add potatoes to this recipe?

Yes, this is an absolute new variation that can be made. To do this, cut the potatoes to the same size as the sweet potato and follow the exact instructions in the recipe.

Is this dish just a snacking recipe?

This spicy sweet potato is satisfying, creates a texture, and enhances the overall flavors of the salad, soup, or baked beans.

What to serve with?

This is a standalone snacking recipe. However, feel free to serve with dips(like Sriracha aioli sauce), soups, salads(like this grape salad), pasta, and grilled meat.

I love this savory take on sweet potatoes. I usually just put some butter and brown sugar on them, but there's so much more you can do with them!
