How To Build The Basic Spice Blend

  • Step 1: Start with the base. Choose a main flavor base, such as paprika, cumin, coriander, chili powder, turmeric, or onion powder. This gives the blend its main taste and color.
  • Step 2: Add aromatics. Mix in garlic powder, mustard powder, cardamom, or dried herbs. These ingredients deepen and balance the seasoning.
  • Step 3: Add heat. Use cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, or ground black pepper. Always start with a small amount and build up as needed.
  • Step 4: Balance it. If you prefer, you can balance the blend with dried citrus, lemon crystals, salt, or sugar. Stir everything well and store it in an airtight jar in a cool, dry place until ready to use.

How To Store?

Most homemade spice blends taste best for up to 6 months. However, I recommend using them within 3 months for the freshest flavor, as heat and light can shorten the shelf life of spices.

Store homemade spice blends in airtight jars or containers in a cool, dry place. Keep them away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Also, always use a dry spoon to avoid clumping.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are spice blend recipes?

Spice blend recipes are homemade seasoning mixes made by combining dried spices, herbs, salt, and sometimes sugar. They add quick flavor to meals instantly, like Cajun seasoning, chicken seasoning, or blackened salmon seasoning.

What is the difference between a spice blend and a dry rub?

A spice blend is a general seasoning mix that can be used to flavor soups, salads, vegetables, rice, or everyday meals. A dry rub is also a seasoning mix, but it is mainly used to coat meat, seafood, tofu, or vegetables before grilling, roasting, or smoking.

Can you make a spice blend less spicy?

Yes, absolutely. Since this is homemade, you can adjust the heat as you like. Reduce spicy ingredients like red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, chili powder, or black pepper if you prefer a milder blend.

Do I need to toast the spices before making the blend?

If you are using whole spices, lightly toasting them improves the flavor. If you are using powdered spices, toasting is not necessary. Most of my recipes use powdered spices, so there is no need for toasting.

Can I use old spices for making these blends?

You can use old spices, but the flavor may not be strong. Ground spices tend to lose flavor faster than whole spices. Before using them, smell and taste the spices. If they do not smell fresh, it is better to replace them.

What can I use homemade spice blends for?

You can use homemade spice blends for chicken, fish, shrimp, vegetables, potatoes, rice, soups, stews, tacos, pasta, popcorn, and marinades. They are great for quick weeknight cooking or a holiday gift to your family & friends.
